__________B O O K__R E V I E W__________
I first found this book on NetGalley, and read the excerpt. I fell in love with this story. It wasn’t nearly enough, and left me needing to know the full story. I was unholy excited when I was contacted to read the full ARC, and review it here on Word Gurgle.
This story delivers a profound tale to its readers, with seriously complex characters, who set out on an arduous and difficult adventure. The entire, impeccably written, story happens in a wonderfully built world that drives the story. The detail is in all the right places, painting vivid settings, and personalities.
And the battle scenes . . . fuck yeah! Magic (lots of it), and evil stuff, and intrigue, and death, and swords, and we’re off the see the wizard. Wait, fuck the wizard, off with his head.
When Heavens Fall is a deep story, for serious readers. There is nothing light-hearted about the world or the many characters within it. I’m excited this is a series. I need these in hardcover on my shelf. I'm happy to give this novel five stars.

Fantasy, High FantasyIf you pick a fight with Shroud, Lord of the Dead, you had better ensure your victory, else death will mark only the beginning of your suffering. A book giving its wielder power over the dead has been stolen from a fellowship of mages that has kept the powerful relic dormant for centuries. The thief, a crafty, power-hungry necromancer, intends to use the Book of Lost Souls to resurrect an ancient race and challenge Shroud for dominion of the underworld. Shroud counters by sending his most formidable servants to seize the artifact at all cost. However, the god is not the only one interested in the Book, and a host of other forces converge, drawn by the powerful magic that has been unleashed. Among them is a reluctant Guardian who is commissioned by the Emperor to find the stolen Book, a troubled prince who battles enemies both personal and political, and a young girl of great power, whose past uniquely prepares her for an encounter with Shroud. The greatest threat to each of their quests lies not in the horror of an undead army but in the risk of betrayal from those closest to them. Each of their decisions comes at a personal cost and will not only affect them, but also determine the fate of their entire empire. The first of an epic swords & sorcery fantasy series, Marc Turner's When the Heavens Fall features gritty characters, deadly magic, and meddlesome gods.
*I received an advanced copy of this via NetGalley in exchange for a fair review*
*Note: I recommend reading Marc Turner’s short story There’s A Devil Watching. It gives great insight to the tone of When The Heavens Fall and a sample of his masterful writing. It's free, so you have zero excuse.
